PERFORMANCE SERIES PRESENTS CASHORE MARIONETTES
Come be swept away by the theatrical magic of marionettes
at their best. See The Cashore Marionettes in the critically
acclaimed performance that has enchanted audiences throughout
North America on Saturday, April 5, at 1 p.m. in SUNY
Potsdam’s Sara M. Snell Music Theater.
Following the performance at 2:30 p.m. is a free workshop
with Pennsylvania-based artist Joseph Cashore, who manipulates
the strings of these amazingly lifelike marionettes.
The performance, “Simple Gifts,” recommended
for adults and children age 8 and up, is a series of
touching character portrayals and scenes from everyday
life set to a succession of stunning music by such composers
as Vivaldi, Strauss, Beethoven and Copland.
Through a combination of virtuoso manipulation, beautiful
music, theatrical illusion and artistic insight, the
show provides a sensitive vision of what it is to be
human. Each marionette is featured in a vignette that
is totally engaging and highly entertaining. From humorous
to tragic, Cashore spans the range of emotions with
characters and actions that are amazingly convincing.
Cashore has received numerous awards for his artistry
including a Pew Fellowship for Performance Art, based
upon his artistic accomplishment; a Henson Foundation
Grant, an award intended to help promote puppetry to
adult audiences; and a Citation of Excellence from the
UNIMA-USA, the highest honor an American puppeteer can
receive. The Cashore Marionettes are so well conceived
and projected, the movement so convincing, the illusion
so powerful, that the result is a compelling, unforgettable
theatrical experience.
This project is partially supported by a grant from
Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour, a program developed
and funded by The Heinz Endowments; the William Penn
Foundation; the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a
state agency; and The Pew Charitable Trusts; and administered
by Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation.
Additional support is provided by the E.J. Noble Foundation,
the Maresca Family Endowment for the Arts, North Country
Patrons of the Arts, The Sweetgrass Foundation and Willow
Tree Florist and Landscaping.
