MUSIC HEATING UP!!

Hey all it J in the Morning and this months cd review is for George Strait’s, Troubadour. Few artists have capitalized on country music’s conservatism as well as George Strait, regarded by many as the genre’s modern-day king. Finding a way to balance his skill with traditional country styles with the pop polish of the urban cowboy era that dominated the genre at the time of his debut, Strait perfected his trademark formula very early in his career and has rarely strayed from it, and the result of that consistency has been an astonishing 56 #1 singles between 1982 and 2006. “I Saw God Today,” the first single from his 25th album, Troubadour, looks to extend that streak, vaulting into the Top 5 in just six weeks, making it one of the fastest-rising singles of Strait’s career. The read on Strait is that he’s been perhaps too conservative over the course of his career—consider some of the comparatively edgier projects that Alan Jackson has recorded—but his last few projects have found him taking a few calculated risks. Troubadour continues in that vein, with Strait making slight adjustments to his formula and recording some songs that don’t sound like variations on previous hits.

The best of these departures, “West Texas Town,” a duet with songwriter Dean Dillon, finds Strait pulling off an excellent take on Texas Swing that favorably recalls, Asleep at the Wheel. “House of Cash,” a duet with Patty Loveless, who is in predictably stellar voice, foregrounds a far grittier electric guitar riff than is typically found on Strait’s records, and it actually works with Strait’s just-behind-the-beat delivery. Unfortunately, not all of the risks pay off quite so well: In an attempt to update “Convoy,” “Brothers of the Highway” uses the kind of pirate imagery more commonly associated with Kenny Chesney, while “River of Love” adopts a second-rate Jimmy Buffett production style that simply doesn’t work for Strait. 5 stars across the board George is the KING OF COUNTRY...until next month it’s Jason in the Morning....c-ya ---

MONTHLY TOP PICKS - Jason in the Morning, DJ - Q Country 102.9 ----Mar Edition - Volume 2 - Issue 9

hey ya’ll Jason in the morning here and as we start to see signs of Spring and get ready to kiss old man winter goodnight....We have some great new country music including the new George Strait Single “I saw God Today”, the typical strait tune, great lyrics and a Killer Chorus it is a sure number 1 which will make 50 plus number one hits. The other new single I love is not all that new, Garth Brooks and Huey Lewis hook up for a blazin rendition of Hueys 80’s classic “Workin for a Livin” you can find the track on Brooks Ultimate Hits collection and also features the Video on that collection as well. For CD’s, Trace Adkins greatest hits is a good choice. So far, the biggest hit on Trace Adkins’s latest greatest hits is “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk,” a crossover song that borders on novelty status. (See, it’s a country song using urban slang spread by cable TV - and the title rhymes.) But Adkins’s release features 3 brand new songs, and 1 of them could outstrip that 2005 hit. The most likely contender is “I Got My Game On,” which sounds like it might pick up in the same honky tonk where the other hit took place, judging from the lyrics: “The little hottie at the bar just gave me a wink. Flashed my platinum card and buy her a drink. From that look she’s giving me, it’s a damn good thing I’ve got my game on.”

The new songs were intended for a new studio album, but Adkins’s career took a different track, and he’ll be appearing on the celebrity addition of Donald Trump’s “The Apprentice.” That change led to the second greatest hits collection in Adkins’ s 12-year career. There’s one song, “Chrome” that’s on both greatest hits CDs.

Make sure to Request Trace and others at 1-800-927-1029...until next month it’s Jason in the mornin...c-ya ---Jason in the Morning

MONTHLY TOP PICKS - Jason in the Mornin', DJ - Q Country 102.9 ----Nov Edition - Volume 2 - Issue 5

Hey Gang it’s Jason in the mornin back with another Country Music review...First up Carrie Underwoods new disc “Carnival Ride” plays out more like a rated G Matinee, 1st listen and it is sugary sweet...think Dixie Chicks without the George Bush Baggae...First Single “So Small” could be “Jesus take the Wheel” Part two. She angles for a “Before He Cheats”-type pop crossover with “Last Name,” right down to the plodding guitar. And “I Know You Won’t” fills the role of big pop ballad “Inside Your Heaven.”
Underwood does stretch a little, letting a bit of her sass shine through on “The More Boys I Meet,” with some nice images of dating duds (“oversized pants with an ego to match”) and the killer country hook of “The more boys I meet, the more I love my dog.” There’s some Coldplay to “Twisted” and some Miranda Lambert-styled spunk to “Get Out of This Town” and “All-American Girl,” but only trace amounts.
It’s hard to be this blank slate, for this long a time, but Underwood clearly works at it. She’s trying to be a singer, not a personality - kind of refreshing, in a time when private lives so often triumph over public work. But as nice as “Carnival Ride” has turned out, Underwood will simply be going around in circles until she invests a little more of herself into the process.
Also live country music notes Keith Urban and Gary Allen play Ottawa ...and Bon Jovi is in Ottawa Nov. 17th...Until next month Keep it tuned to Q-Country 102.9..and get your request on at 1-800-927-1029. C-ya ---Jason

MONTHLY TOP PICKS - Jason in the Morning, DJ - Q Country 102.9 ----Oct Edition - Volume 2 - Issue 4

Hey it’s me Jason in the mornin, fall has arrived the leaves are falling, the temps are falling, BUT the music stays red hot!!!! first cd i am reviewing is sarah buxton Downloading music online is growing at a rapid pace, so it’s no surprise that Lyric Street decided to release a digital-only package for new artist Sarah Buxton.
Buxton, taking the experience in stride, aptly named it “Almost My Record,” and with just five generally contemporary country tunes, there’s no room for filler. Buxton wrote Keith Urban’s “Stupid Boy” and includes her version. It’s much more convincing with a female voice narrating the story of a male character’s follies.
“American Daughters” is an autobiographical song about leaving Lawrence, Kansas to pursue her dreams although she “got married way too young.” Buxton, now divorced, sings that if she can pursue her dreams, anybody can. “That Kind of Day” and “Love is a Trip” are both light-hearted uptempo songs about dealing with all of the challenges and circumstances that daily life presents.
And “Innocence” might be one of the best songs about reminiscing of young love since Deana Carter’s “Strawberry Wine.”
Up next is Luke Bryan he has described his hometown of Leesburg, Ga. as “100 miles north of the Florida border, 100 miles east of the Alabama border and in the middle of nowhere.”
His 11-song debut has a similarly rural feel to it. Bryan, who co-wrote Billy Currington’s number one hit “Good Directions,” proves his versatility on an album that combines twangy vocals and fiddles with catchy melodies.
“Country Man,” however, is chock full of country clichés and is Bryan’s only misstep on an otherwise solid album. It’s catchy in the same way “Achy Breaky Heart” was 15 years ago.
“All My Friends Say” is an upbeat party song about a guy who relies on second-hand information to remember the night before, and the title track is as simple as it sounds.

----Hey it’s Jason in the mornin catch me mon-fri 6am-10am on Q-102.9 FM.....we have all kinds of great fun with the Q country Brainbuster....I play your request from 9-10 on the Prescott House of Flowers all request hour...send me an e-quest - it’s Jason@q1029.com. The First Single I wanna share is “My Kind of Day” by Sarah Buxton, she got her start a few years back on the Bold & the Beuatiful playing sassy siren Morgan Dewitt..she then moved to nashville and her debut CD is set to release in June, all though this is the lead single we have heard her name associated with in country music news recently (due to Keith Urban’s “Stupid Boy” song) a song she wrote and will include on her own disc. The next single is Clay walkers follow up to “Fore She Was Mamma” and is the title track to his latest...”Fall,” a mid tempo tune sure to catch your attention the first time through with a unforgettable Chrous. Both are songs that should be in your collection of country tunes. CD’s now: The First, a live disc from Alan Jackson, George Strait and Jimmy Buffett recorded in Texas where eveything is BIG and this disc proves that theory right as the set pulls from all three legands catologs....from start to finish it never slows up with Alan calling George King George and the Strait man refurring to Jackson as the best song writer in Country Music sprinkle in some Buffett and you have a CD to sail into summer with. The Next disc is Blake Sheltons newest “Pure BS” as in Blake Shelton, The Lead single is “Don’t Make Me” and Blake is the guy I had a chance to hang out with on his tour bus during his show at the St.Lawrence County Fair a couple years back..truly one of the nicest guys in all of Music. Well, I will be talking to you next month, until then See-YA Jason.

MONTHLY TOP PICKS - Jason in the Morning, DJ - Q Country 102.9 ----April Edition - Volume 1 - Issue 10

----Hey it's Jason in the Morning from Q-Country 102.9 here to give you my top picks for the month of April...the HOT new singles, 1st up it's hard to bet against a man with 54 number one singles...yup thats right George Strait is back with "Wrapped" a usual Strait Classic about the Love for a woman and how's she has him "wrapped around her finger". Looks like George could have his 55th number one. The other single is Lost in the moment from Big and Rich a little different from the Music maffia Rock n Country Circus that has become Big and Rich...this is a mid-tempo song about marrying the love of your life. Top 2 cd's now. Up first Tim McGraw is back with "Let it Go" we are spinning his first single "Last Dollar" (fly away) which by the way was penned by Big Kenny from Big and Rich...the disc is a 9 out of 10, as Tim teams again with the dancehall doctors his backing band of the last 10 years...the stand out track is, "Shotgun Rider" a lovely duet with wife Faith Hill. The second disc is "Waitin in the Country" by Jason Micheal Carroll...he broke on the scene with "Aylissa Lies" and has followed it up big time with "Livin Out Our Lovesong"...I score it 8 out of 10...These are my picks and I’m sticking to em...C-ya
