Lizzy Hale

Vicious is Halestorm's fourth full length studio album. The latest from the community of Red Lion, Pennsylvania showcases the continuing maturity of band. Lizzy Hale and the boys have created a hard-hitting uncompromising album. The power of the music continues to wave the flag for hard rock while examining love and life on the edge. Vicious demonstrates the promise of one of the best rising hard rock bands of the new generation.

Lizzy Hale and her brother Arejay have been actively writing and performing original music before they were in their teens. They released their first EP Don't Mess With The Time Man in 1999. Guitarist Joe Hottinger joined The Band in 2003, followed by bassist Josh Smith in 2004. Smith actually replaced Hale's dad, Roger Hale who was the bands original bass player.

The group was signed by Atlantic Records in 2005 and released, the now out of print live EP One and Done in 2006. FYI - I checked the availability on the internet while writing this review. It is available on Amazon for any where from $79.99 to $167.43. Little out of my price line. Halestorm's self-titled full-length debut was released in 2009. Live in Philly, a live CD/ DVD combo was released in 2010. The ReAnimate EP containing cover song was released in 2011 followed by a second EP in 2012 entitled Hello, It's Mz. Hyde. Their second full length album The Strange Case Of was released the same year. Strange Case Of awarded Halestorm with a Grammy for the single Love Bites ... (So Do I ). The Grammy was the first by a female fronted band to be both nominated and win in the Best Hard Rock / Metal Performance category. The album also featured Freak Like Me which reached the top of the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks. 2013 The Band release their second EP of covers entitled Reanimate2.0. Halestorm's third full length album Into The Wild Life, released in 2015 yielded four top ten mainstream rock hits. That was followed by another cover EP Reanimate 3.0. in 2017.

Halestorm 1

The new album Vicious highlights the broad spectrum of Lizzy Hale. The charismatic lead vocalist does it all – songstress, rhythm guitar, acoustic guitar, and keyboards. However, it is not just Lizzy, the chemistry of the entire band and its individual talents are what makes this band special. Arejay Hale's drum skills are criminally underrated, Joe Hottinger's aggressive guitar licks abound through out and Josh Smiths keeps the bottom end running like a locomotive. All four add their vocal talents either up front or backing the lead. Not many voices in modern rock are as powerful and emotional as frontwoman's Lizzy Hale. The blistering lead track Black Vultures opens with epic screams and a driving rhythm that pushes you into a full out assault in to the Rock and Roll arena. Skulls continues with a driving bass line accompanied by an eerie keyboard segment and some nice tempo changes. Uncomfortable, Do Not Disturbed, Buzz and Conflicted take a page from Joan Jett's sexuality, but featuring a heavier sound with seething to soaring vocals. Killing Ourselves To Live has a massive memorable chorus backed with Hottinger's intertwined lead guitar. Heart of Novovcaine slows down the tempo but not the intensity of Hale's voice. White Dress not only rocks but demonstrates the empowerment factor Lizzy Hale often showcases in her writing skills. The Silence closes out the album with an acoustic ballad that compels you to appreciate the raw, emotional and incredible range of Lizzy Hales vocal talents.

Halestorm and In This Moment will be performing at the Oncenter in Syracuse on November 23rd,2018.

Check out the new Halestorm – Vicious. As with all my reviews - If you like, what I like, you will either end up buying the cd or streaming The Band's latest project.
